NANS to NYSC: Reverse N4, 000 Call-up Letter Processing Fee

SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 5:11 PM0 COMMENTSVIEWS: 5
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B (South-South & South-East) has called on the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen Johnson Olawumi to immediately reverse what is described as “obnoxious policy” of N4, 000 fee for online processing of Call-Up letter for all prospective corps member.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the organisation; Pedro Obi, the statement reads in part “In as much as we agree that getting the Call-Up Letter online is a right step in a right direction, we equally want to remind the Director General that NYSC is a call to service, a service to our Fatherland and as such the financial burden shouldn’t be on the corps member, rather the commission should look inward for other ways to sustain the scheme for optimum service delivery.

“We therefore call for an outright abolition of the fee as the argument for it’s sustenance holds no water except for self enrichment to the detriment of the poor suffering masses, whose hope for a job after passing out of the scheme is not even guaranteed,” Obi stated. He added that except the Director General wants to give room for those calling for the scrapping of the scheme to have more bullet points in support of their call, “this we are sure will be the only reason the Director General of the scheme will go ahead to implement this inhuman policy of the year and we can assure him that the student community will be mobilized to resist the policy in its entirety”.

Violent protest paralyses activities at Akwa Ibom poly

NO fewer than three persons were injured on Friday following students’ violent protest that crippled  activities at the Uyo campus of the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic.

It was learnt the students’ leaders, under the aegis of the Joint Executive Council of Student Associations on Campus Association (JECAC), called out their members in protest against management’s alleged refusal to allow Students Union activities on the campus.

Saturday Tribune findings revealed that prior to Friday’s protest, the students’ council had met on September 9, to impress it on the school management to allow for the conduct of the Students Union elections in accordance with the constitution of the students’ body.

The communiqué, signed by 37 students’ leaders across all academic departments in the school, asked the management to comply with the directive or risked students’ unrest in the institution.

The communiqué, signed by Akan Iidongest Eyo, Chairman of the committee; the Secretary, Comrade Ibanga Michael and 35 others, read in parts: “It is the constitutional right of every Nigerian student to vote and be voted for as contained in the solidarity constitution of the Students Union of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic.

“The continuous denial of our right is capable of causing the eruption of major student’s unrest…”

Asking the management to follow through this resolution before the end of the month, the aggrieved students, who recalled that the suspension of students’ union activities had been in force in the institution in the last 12 years, said they could no longer contain their bottled anger over the infringement of their rights by management.

NANS Condemns Abuja Bomb Blast

APRIL 15, 2014 10:54 PM0 COMMENTSVIEWS: 18
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B, has condemned in strong terms, early Monday bomb blast at Nyanya, Abuja, that left 75 people dead and 140 injured.

The body noted that the incident calls for sober reflection by all the youths of this country, wondering “what is wrong with this Country, whom have we offended; because in all of these blast/explosion, the youths/Students are the most affected.

It further lamented that the killing of innocent Nigerian citizens has turned to a daily routine by these blood sucking demons masquerading as Islamic apologist, when Islam itself as a religion, is a religion of peace.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Union, Pedro Obi, reads “This senseless killings has to stop, we call for the complete overhauling of the Nations Security Agencies and immediate probe of yesterday’s incidence and the findings made public with immediate effect by the Federal Government.

“The bomb blast is a clear indication that there is a strong orchestrated conspiracy against this administration, owing to the fact that the State of Emergency in the 3 North Eastern State is suppose to elapse in few days from now. This is a pointer that some wicked persons in high places are eating fat with this State of Emergency and we call on the Federal Government to immediately act now and stop the killing of innocent Nigerians on a daily basis. In as much as we believe the Federal Government is doing some work to curb this insurgent, we feel there is need to change tactics and inject new idea to stop this well coordinated fight against the State.

“In the same vein, we condole with the families of the blast victims, who lost their loved ones and pray that God will give the families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, and to the injured ones, we pray for quick healing and recovery from the trauma of the incident. “And to the general public, let’s be security conscious. Enough is Enough”!

Fashola faults national awards to political office holders

Fashola faults national awards to political office holders

on September 25, 2014   /   in News 9:57 pm   /   Comments

Lagos –  Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Thursday said that the award of national honours to political office holders was inappropriate.

Fashola spoke in Lagos at the 4th Gani Fawehinmi Colloquium organised by the Gani Fawehinmi Chambers of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.

He said that the practice undermined the culture of hard work as it presumed recipients had done exceptionally well in the service of the nation, even when they had not completed their terms in office.

Fashola said national honours should, ideally, be conferred on people based on retrospective assessment of their achievements and the impact they had made to national development.

Fashola
The  theme of the colloquium was “ Consolidating Democratic Norms through Credible Electoral Process.“

“The concept of giving public officers national awards simply offends, because I ask, what will you give to such persons after he has left office and has done well?

“You see, we can use the game of football to explain why this is not appropriate. Will FIFA stop a game at half-time and say let’s give the Most Valuable Player award to this or that player because he has done well?

“ No, that is only done at the end of the game. Or will fans or people congratulate a striker for instance, for goals he has not scored? No, things are not done that way.

“ The whole idea undermines the culture of hard work and it is better we start recognising people the right way and for the right reasons,’’ he said.

Fashola also decried the arbitrary conferment of awards on people by tertiary institutions and other organisations, saying this promoted wrong values in the country.

He said the conferment of such honours should be strictly for exceptional and deserving individuals and not for pecuniary expectations or other favours.

According to him, the Lagos State University (LASU) has been directed to suspend the conferment of awards in order to preserve respectability of such honours.

“My directive to the university is not because I am a saint or that there are no deserving people in our state the university can honour.

“On the contrary, I believe those awards are critical building blocks of the moral and development fibre of the society and I feel duty bound to ensure that we do not lose or destroy those blocks,“ he said.

The governor urged Nigerians to guard the nation`s democracy jealously by shunning acts that could weaken or truncate it.

He advised Nigerians to embrace the right democratic values, which according to him, would strengthen governance and bring about development.

Fashola said the power to change the country for the better rested largely in the hands of the electorate and urged them to use it to bring about good leadership.

“The power to bring out change rests in your hands, the electorate. You can help change the country for the better by voting out bad leaders while keeping good ones,’’ he said.

The governor said the media had a big role to play in strengthening democratic norms by giving the people the right information.

He charged the media to be alive to its democratic responsibility by shunning partisanship and reporting only issues that promoted development.

Fashola described the late Fawehinmi as a man of many positive values and noted that the country would be better if it lived by some of these values.

Also speaking, constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, said democracy was a misnomer in the absence of the rule of law.

He urged Nigerians to always respect and obey the law as that would help strengthen democracy.

Earlier, Prof. Akin Ibidapo-Obe, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, commended Fashola for the support he had rendered to the faculty.

He said that the support, which covered sponsorship of students and participation in overseas academic competitions, had helped deepen legal training in the faculty.

Nigerian Students Express Anger over Death of Immigration Job Seekers, Demand Sack of Minister, Immigration Boss

By Oghenekevwe Laba
LAGOS MARCH 18TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B has expressed anger over the death of applicants during the immigration aptitude test calling for the immediate sack of Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro and the Controller of Nigerian Immigration, David Parradang.
In a statement signed by the Public Relation Officer (PRO) NANS Zone B, Comrade Pedro Obi made available to URHOBOTODAY, the students who said they were still in total shock and disoriented over the incident pointed out that the turnout of millions of Nigerian youths as job seekers for a mere 3,000 job slot in the Nigerian Immigration Services is another attestation of the present pathetic situation facing Nigerian youths and graduates.
“The death of innocent Nigerians and the numerous injuries recorded at the National Stadium, Abuja and other parts of the country is an axiomatic representation of civil servants inability to handle even a mere recruitment screening exercise, how much more of effectively handling the offices they have been manning for the past years.
“In as much as we believe that the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR) is committed in bridging the youth unemployment gap in the nation, we at NANS are still confused at how Mr. President intends to achieve this,” the students queried, adding that the recent turnout recorded at the immigration job screening centers, Nigerian student, from basic to university level would not only be skeptical of their future but will equally be making out second plans on economic survival knowing already that there is no decent job waiting for them in the country called Nigeria.
The students maintained that the recent charade called screening in the Nigerian Immigration Service is a clear confirmation that the Nigerian Immigration Services chiefs and in extension the Minister of Interior Affairs, Hon. Abbah Moro, have failed in their primary duty to provide an enabling environment for all applicants to participate in the aptitude test without pandemonium.
“NANS see no reason why the applicants could not be shared or rather split into batches to avoid such ugly incidence, knowing full well the number of applications recorded for the exercise. It is just another show of shame and failure in the usual style synonymous with the Nigerian civil servants. There are also rumours of each applicants paying one thousand Naira (N1000) for this job as part of processing fees. NANS wish to know why and how such monies will be spent knowing full well that over one Billion Naira (N1Billion) must have been received if a million persons had applied alone as rumoured,” the statement alleged.
Consequently, NANS called on the Federal Government to carry out a thorough investigation into the ugly incidence to forestall future occurrence, stressing that the Nigerian youths and the Nigerian students in particular would not take it likely with any of such agencies who fails in its duty to the Nigerian people in the future.

Former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia, has faulted the presidential ambition of General Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking to journalist yesterday, September 24 in Abuja, the former governor said Buhari and Atiku’s continued aspiration is blocking the interest of other Nigerians, advising them to bury their presidential ambition, Vanguard reports.

Left: Atiku Abubakar, Right: Mhuammadu Buhari
Though Buhari, a former head of state and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to openly declare his presidential ambition for the forthcoming 2015 election, Atiku declared his ambition yesterday.

Omehia stated that they both have the constitutional right to aspire for any office in the land but they should rather sponsor younger candidates to the position, rather than having a perpetual aspiration.

He said: “They have consistently contested for the position and their continued aspiration is blocking the interest of the public. Why not now believe that there is a destiny and that its not your destiny to be president? You just give it up and God has a way of doing it for them.

“But besides that, there are other competent people you could also sponsor and support. You can’t say every person in your community is a duller and you are the only wise man.

“My position is that since they have been trying and it is not working out, they should see it as providence.”

According to Omehia neither Buhari nor Atiku can defeat President Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election as he has achieved more than the both of them.

Buhari has refused to give up his fight for the presidential post as there are indications he will be contesting once again in the forthcoming 2015 presidential elections under the platform of the APC. He has contested three consecutive times and lost to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku served as the 2nd elected Vice-President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with President Olusegun Obasanjo but he is now a member of the APC. He released his campaign video some days back, promising Nigerians change.

JONATHAN CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION BY U.N ON TERRORISM

President Goodluck Jonathan declared in New York on Wednesday that pressing challenges to global peace and security have made it imperative that urgent action be taken on the reformation of United Nations Security Council.

Jonathan made the statement at the special session of the 193-member UN General Assembly and called for an urgent review of United Nations peacekeeping operations across the world.

Jonathan told the annual gathering of global leaders that the 1965 reform needs to be revisited quickly. “Mr President, the failure of unanimity of action by the Security Council over pressing challenges to global peace and security in Syria, Iraq, the conflict in Ukraine and the renewed aggression between Israel and Palestine, have strengthened the case for the reform of the Security Council.

“Today’s challenges can only be resolved by a Security Council whose working methods engender transparency, inclusivity and common ownership through equitable representation of all regions in the decision making process of the council.

“It is imperative that we take advantage of 2015, which also marks the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 reform, to make concrete progress on the reform of the council.

“We call for a fast-tracked process, in line with the initiative of His Excellency John Ashe, President of the 68th General Assembly, for establishing a working Group on reform.

“Indeed, the Security Council requires the collective resolve of all member states to ensure that 2015 brings decisive progress,” he said.

He noted that although the UN was established about 70 years ago to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, the world had sadly continued to experience conflict and human suffering.

“Today’s terrorism is vicious and aimless. Its consequences are extremely agonising, marked by a tendency to annihilate victims, and completely destroy infrastructure and properties.

“The involvement of foreign fighters has remained a common feature of terrorist groups – whether Al Qaeda in the Maghreb, Al Shaabab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria, or the newly emerging Islamic State (IS).

“The new dimension introduced by IS to conquer territory and establish its destructive ideology, is a major challenge that must be collectively halted before it becomes the norm.

“This refocuses attention on the need to review present tools for UN peacekeeping operations,” Jonathan said.

He assured the gathering that the Federal Government would continue to do everything possible to rescue the abducted Chibok schoolgirls and curb the violent and criminal activities of Boko Haram.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the countries and organizations that expressed solidarity with us, and have continued to support our determined efforts to free our daughters.

“Although it has been over three months since they were abducted, we have never relented in our efforts to set them safely free. Together with our partners, we are working assiduously to free our daughters and reunite them with their families.

“Let me underline today, that we shall not waiver until we end this mindless war on the innocent and bring all the perpetrators to justice. We will triumph over terrorism,” Jonathan stated.

On the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa, the president assured the UN that Nigeria was free of Ebola but added that the world must act in unison to stop the disease from becoming a global disaster.

“While Nigeria was able to respond effectively to control the spread of the disease, the situation in Liberia and Sierra Leone requires sustainable, collective global action to contain.

“Through the concerted efforts of our healthcare professionals, the World Health Organisation and our international partners, we have been able to contain the EVD and we can confidently say that Nigeria is today, Ebola-free.

“We have, however, continued to support efforts at containing the spread of the disease in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

“It is pertinent to stress the need for the international community to properly appreciate the enormity of the EVD challenge.

“Indulging in isolationist and discriminatory tendencies will only worsen an already critical situation. To prevent the disease from becoming a global catastrophe, the UN must accord it the concerted effort it deserves,” Jonathan said.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s belief in the indispensable role of the UN in the global bid to overcome the challenges of conflict, terrorism, climate change and economic development.

“We have been, and will remain a reliable and active partner, especially as we collectively work to resolve the new and emerging threats to global peace and security,” Jonathan said.

BREAKING NEWS: FAYOSE SLAPS HIGH COURT JUDGE, ORDERS HIS THUGS TO BEAT HIM, OTHERS UP

BREAKING NEWS: FAYOSE SLAPS HIGH COURT JUDGE, ORDERS HIS THUGS TO BEAT HIM, OTHERS UP

Posted by: webmaster Posted date: September 25, 2014

There was confusion at the premises of the Ekiti State High Court on Thursday morning as the state Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, allegedly ordered his thugs to beat up a judge, Justice John Adeyeye, for what he described as the judge’s “rudeness to him”.

The pandemonium that ensued scuttled the Ekiti State Governorship Election petition Tribunal sitting billed to hold today at the High court, Ado-Ekiti, as judicial workers abandoned their duty post and ran for safety.

Witnesses said the pro-Fayose thugs had besieged the court premises as early as 6a.m., while a detachment of policemen from the police headquarters were also seen on major streets and around the court.

Justice Adeyeye of High Court 3, who was miffed by the huge number of the thugs as they surged towards the court premises had approached Mr. Fayose and urged him to prevail on “his supporters” to keep a safe distance from the court premises.

An enraged Mr. Fayose was said to have shouted the judge down, slapped him and ordered his men to beat him up. Immediately, thugs numbering about 20 pounced on Justice Adeyeye, beat him up and tore his clothes, while his co workers scampered and shouted for help.

Following the development, judicial workers hurriedly shut down the court premises thereby preventing any court proceeding for hours before the police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the surging crowd.

Justice Adeyeye is presently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Ado-Ekiti.

A similar scenario had played out on Monday when suspected PDP thugs stormed the high court premises, attacked the trial judge, some litigants and judicial workers in the bid to prevent hearing in a case to determine Mr. Fayose’s eligibility for the June 21 governorship election.

NANS Frowns at Politicisation of Chibok Abduction

May 11, 2014 7:46 am 0 CommentsViews: 34

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B, has condemned in strong terms, the ongoing politicisation of the abduction of over 200 girls of Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State.
The association posited that this is not the best of time for all Nigerians, stressing the need to separate politics from the criminal activities of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram.
A statement by the Zone B Public Relations Officer, Pedro Obi “States that, this is not the best of time for us as a people and we must as a matter urgent public importance separate politics from the activities of Boko Haram, if we must make a headway in this fight against these blood suckers.
This is the time for Nigerians of all class to form a concerted Synergy and rally round President Goodluck Jonathan GCFR, and support the Federal Government’s efforts at rescuing the abducted Girls by the Boko Haram insurgence. It should be noted that, no individual can win the fight against terrorism, but terrorists cannot succeed when the people are united to fight. Therefore the time for us to be more united is Now, as Unity remains the key to this struggle.
The entire Nigerian students in South-South and South-East join all Nigerian Students all over the World, particularly Borno State Students in prayer this trying moment of our existence and call on them to be more united as we fight this deadly monster in our society. We also sympathize with the parents and relations of the victims and demand that the Girls must be brought back in safe condition”
Obi said NANS Zone B has also launched the media hashtag to be used for the campaign “to show our disaffection to the politicization of the Chibok Girls abduction and call for our Girls to be brought back”.
You can follow the struggle on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #NANSZoneBSaysBringBackOurGirls .

NANS OPEN LETTER TO BORNO STATE GOVERNOR, HIS EXCELLENCY, ALHAJI KASHIM SHETTIMA ON THE NEED TO LEAD THE RESCUE TEAM FOR THE RELEASE OF CHIBOK GIRLS.

12/07/2014

NANS OPEN LETTER TO BORNO STATE GOVERNOR, HIS EXCELLENCY, ALHAJI KASHIM SHETTIMA ON THE NEED TO LEAD THE RESCUE TEAM FOR THE RELEASE OF CHIBOK GIRLS.

Your Excellency, with great respect and loyalty to your office (as the Executive Governor of Borno state which hosts the Sambisa Forest and also, the Chibok village from where over 200 students were kidnapped exactly 1O9 days ago), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B hereby calls on you alongside the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Namadi Sambo and the Northern opinion leaders, Northern Elders Forum (NEF) especially Professor Ango Abdullahi, having noticed with heavy heart the delay in the rescue of our innocent sisters, to lead the rescue team to the Sambisa Forest and secure the release of our fellow students.
Sir, do not feel that our call is an abuse to your personality or your office, it is just a demand that might solve the immediate challenge faced by the nation-at-large in rescuing our fellow students.
Sir, in
order to assure you that the efforts from you and other aforementioned dignitaries is essential, let's ride through the roller-coaster of history which I'm sure would convince you that your effort in leading the rescue team to secure the release of our fellow students is of immediate and paramount importance:
Sir, some few years ago when over 3O Philippines were abducted by the then Niger-Delta Militants, it was recorded that the Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and other opinion leaders in Niger-Delta, including the leader of the South-South people, Pa E.K. Clark were all in the creek for days to secure the release of the abducted foreigners which was successful. Your Excellency Sir, it should also be noted that during the peak of the Niger-Delta Militancy, when the country was crippled economically, it was President Goodluck Jonathan, the then Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that led the team to Niger-Delta Creek for successful disarment of the Niger-Delta Militants
On this note, the National Association of Nigerian Students call on you sir and other opinion leaders as stated
earlier to lead the rescue team to Sambisa Forest to bring our sisters back home.
Sir, you recently acknowledged unequivocally that you know where these girl are. With this claim and also a knowledge of the terrain and way of life of the people in the terrain, we urge you to take immediate step alongside those recommended for you to rescue the girls and also put an end to the high level of insurgency in the nation-at-large as this would indicate your faithfulness to the lines of the oath of office you took wherein you promised to always serve in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, well-being and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thank You Sir.

NANS CONDEMNS CBN ATM WITHDRAWAL POLICY.

PRESS STATEMENT

14/08/2014

NANS CONDEMNS CBN ATM WITHDRAWAL POLICY.

... Calls For Policy Reversal.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) zone B condemns in its entirety the current policy of the Central Bank of Nigerian (CBN), authorizing the payment of 65 Naira for withdrawal with another bank. This was contained in a statement by the coordinator of the zone; Comr. Okorie Ikechukwu, while addressing newsmen on the Anti masses policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria and calls for an immediate reversal of the policy or the entire students in South-South and South-East will be mobilized to lock all banks operating in our campuses and Central Bank of Nigeria offices within the zone.
Also Speaking, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the organisation; Pedro Obi, questioned the rationale behind this harsh policy on the masses, is it that our economy is growing forward or backward? Is it not this same CBN under Emefiele that donated 15 Billion few weeks ago to fight insurgency. Of whose benefit is the policy meant to serve? There is absolutely no reason while Emefiele should return us back to 20th century banking system.
First it was the policy on destruction of trapped ATM Card, even when most cases are as a result of poor network service or mechanical fault by the operator itself, yet CBN can't proffer workable solutions and now it is reintroduction of payment for ATM withdrawal, who knows what is next. It seems all what Emefiele and his team are good at is Anti-masses Policy.
I must say that this policy will be counter productive as it is in strong conflict with the Cashless policy of this same Bank.
The Nigerian Students say NO to this obnoxious policy as the Nigerian Students/Youths will be the most affected if implemented.
We therefore call on all Nigerian students across the Federation to be at alert as we mobilize against this Anti-People Policy.

FACEBOOK USERS TO PAY #500 MONTHLY OR #6,000 YEARLY. The Cable.

FACEBOOK USERS TO PAY #500 MONTHLY OR #6,000 YEARLY. The Cable.
By Mayowa Tijani

We never thought this day would come, when we would have to pay as much as N6,000 ($36) for using the most popular social network on any planet, Facebook.
Just on Monday at Menlo Park in California, USA, chief executive officer of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, told newsmen about the plan to begin charging users for the use of the social network from November 1. The payment (some N500 per month or N6,000 per year), he explained, was for the network to cater to its rising running cost.
“After thinking long and hard about this decision, at the end of the day, we were forced to add this monthly fee,” Zuckerberg said.
“If we don’t do something about our rising costs now, Facebook could cease to exist in the near future.”
Facebook currently has about 1.317 billion users and if just 75 per cent of them start paying the $2.99 monthly fee, the yearly profit would be about $36bn. Massive, isn’t it?
Facebook spokesman Paul Horner blamed the new monthly fee on the tight economy.
“Economic times are tight; the ads on Facebook are not as profitable as we had planned,” he said.
“Our costs are going up as hundreds of thousands of individuals continue to join the site every day.”
Would Facebook users be ready to pay as much as N6,000 per year just to use the social network? TheCable brings you the pulse of the people on the matter:
My Facebook account will still be a normal site I visit frequently. Just that it might prompt me to use more of other social media sites such as Instagram and Twitter. I only use Facebook to chat and I think WhatsApp can cover for that.
Paul Alasiri
My account would still be alive; N500 is nothing if you want to continue to keep in touch with friends. Not everyone is on BBM or Whatsapp. This might not be monthly anyways.
Oluwabusuyi Adebiyi
My account would be dormant for sure; I hardly use it for any gainful purpose, so why pay for what is not so useful.
Felix Abiodun
My account would be as active as ever, because I make use of Facebook for what it meant for.
Oluwaseun Odutayo
Facebook may become a desert place where one rarely visits….
Adewumi Opeyemi
Once Facebook implements that, I will delete my account.
Adekanye Modupeoluwa
Well, if that would really work, then this Facebook account should be managed and operated such that it would be able to fetch me not less than $36 annually. For this to be achieved, my account should be an avenue or platform to sell out myself or my products in a way that would benefit the society and the self. In a nutshell, i think i would be compelled to make my account a bit active and beneficial.
Olowe Michael
The moment that happens, I’m leaving Facebook altogether.
Victor Aiyejuro
The first question is, why would we begin to pay $3 per month? Facebook is not the only social media in platform vogue; people would migrate to other social media and forget about Facebook. My Facebook account would be abandoned once that happen.
Owolabi Yetunde
Once Facebook does that, my account would be of less use.
Janet Michael
By then, N500 a month won’t be a problem, considering the endless possibilities it brings. But another social network might be launched by competitors to rival Facebook, which might be free, and that might leave Facebook in a limbo, Remember, 10 years ago, all we knew was Yahoo Messenger and hi5.
Aminu Smug Amir
My Facebook account will be active, because I won’t hesitate to pay for it. Moreover, the amount is okay.
Rukayat Raheem
I will gladly maximise the usage of other social networks: Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram for my social interactions. Perhaps my Facebook account could get redundant before I have the required fund to run one.
Osho Samuel
I can’t pay such amount considering the fact that I don’t always have the interest in going online every day. Sometimes I’m busy and may just not feel like. I also don’t chat with majority of my friends using Facebook chat. The information available on Facebook can be fetched somewhere else. In fact, it’s a plus for me to make use of that time for something more profitable. So, paying such amount doesn’t worth it.
Ayinde Moromoke
Of course, I would pay to keep my account; you are not expecting me to neglect my friends, my class Facebook group, my mentors, my business and my business Facebook pages. You can’t just expect me to abandon an online presence I’ve been building for the past five years. I don’t think I’ll have any choice than to pay and continue using my account. In fact, I’ll prefer paying 6,000 for the whole year so as to prevent any disruption in service.
Oredola Ibrahim
The cheery news is that the 10 year-old social network has created a way out for “poor” users.
According to Horner, those who cannot manage the cost have a “simple” way to make it known.
“In a new status update, copy and paste the words: ‘I AM POOR. FACEBOOK, PLEASE WAIVE MY MONTHLY FEE. Make sure you include the hashtag #FacebookMonthlyFee,’” he said.
While this will inform the Facebook billing department to waive any fees associated with the user’s account, using a free account would limit the Facebook access.
“Unfortunately for free users, access to all Facebook games will no longer be available,” he further explained.
“There’s also a free option which will allow you access to your Facebook account for up to one hour a week, exceeding that will cost $0.49/minute.
“I think you can agree that it is extremely important to find the right Facebook plan for you!”
Founded on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students – Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, Facebook assumed a worth of $200bn in just 10 years, with presence in more than 70 languages.

The President of the 68th Session of the General Assembly; Heads of State and Government; The Secretary-General; Distinguished Delegates; Ladies and Gentlemen

The President of the 68th Session of the General Assembly;
Heads of State and Government;
The Secretary-General;
Distinguished Delegates;
Ladies and Gentlemen

Mr President,
1.    On behalf of the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

I salute you as you preside over the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.  I assure you of the full support and cooperation of the Nigerian delegation.
2.    I also wish to extend our commendation to the Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon, and place on record, Nigeria’s appreciation for his focused and committed leadership of the United Nations system.

3.    This Session is coming at a particularly trying period when our world faces a number of critical challenges which make it imperative for us to work within the Charter of the United Nations to meaningfully address them.

4.    It is therefore apt that the theme, Post 2015 Development Agenda:  Setting the Stage, signposts our desire and determination to actively cooperate for the improvement of the overall welfare and well-being of the most vulnerable citizens of the member-states of our Organisation.

5.    Nigeria appreciates the consultative nature of designing the Post-2015 development agenda. Earlier in the year, we supported this global outreach through inclusive consultations and surveys of a number of Nigerians who have expressed their aspirations with respect to the world they expect beyond 2015.

6.    A major highlight of this process, which has increased national ownership of the agenda, is the emphasis on the eradication of poverty as the overarching principle in the formulation of the successor framework.

7.    Indeed, tomorrow, we will be hosting a side event on the implementation of the MDGs, in collaboration with the UN, a number of African countries, and our development partners.

8.    As I had cause to say to this Assembly last Session, 2015 is not a destination but only a milestone to a better, safer, healthier and more compassionate world.  Let us therefore renew our commitment to the processes that will develop the post-MDGs framework.

Mr. President,
9.    This objective is of particular resonance to us in Africa where the challenges of poverty, illiteracy, food insecurity, and climate change continue to engage the attention of the political leadership.

10.    The good news however, is that in the last decade, a sustained democratization process across the continent has made significant difference in governance processes, institutions and structures.  Today, we have a renascent Africa that has moved away from the era of dictatorship to a new dawn where the ideals of good governance and an emphasis on human rights and justice are beginning to drive state-society relations. This is the present reality of Africa that must replace the old prejudices and assumptions about the continent.

11.    We are firm in our conviction that democracy is fundamental to achieving the requisite stability that will enable the realization of a sustainable post-2015 development agenda in Africa.

12.    This emergent Africa will require the continued support and partnership of the international community.  An Africa that is no longer merely a destination for aid but one that is involved in constructive, multi-sectoral exchanges on the global stage.  Our continent stands ready to continue to engage the rest of the world as a partner in formulating a global development agenda that will guarantee peace, security and stability.

13.    I wish to express my appreciation for Nigeria’s selection as co-Chair of the Expert Committee on Financing Sustainable Development.

14.    The importance of this Committee’s assignment cannot be overstated. For the post-2015 development agenda to be realistic, it must be backed by a robust financing framework which I hope will receive the strong backing of our Organisation’s more endowed members.

Mr. President,
15.    Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable peace and security propels the country to action along with member states of our sub-regional and continental organisations, whenever stability is threatened in our continent.  In recent years, Africa has had its share of conflicts notably in Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Somalia.

16.    It is noteworthy that African leaders, with the support of the international community, have demonstrated the capacity to work in concert and decisively in pursuit of long-term solutions in the affected States. While a lot more still needs to be done, we are convinced that progress is being made.

17.    The recent Presidential elections in Mali herald a new beginning that should translate into peace and prosperity for its people and provide a stronger basis for stability within the sub-region.  I congratulate President Boubacar Keita. Similarly, the political transition process in Guinea Bissau holds much promise. Among African leaders, there is a greater determination and focus on the transformation of the continent. This is the required impetus for the achievement of development objectives
that will benefit the people, and rebrand the continent even more positively.

18.    Although our world has not witnessed a global war since the establishment of the United Nations, there have been several conflicts with devastating consequences and impact in virtually all regions of the world.  As global citizens, we have a sacred duty to free our world of wars, rivalries, ethnic conflicts, and religious divisions.  Our collective effort in our drive for a better world will continue to bind us together.

Mr. President,
19.    Nigeria continues to support the efforts of the United Nations in addressing the global initiative to combat the menace of the illicit trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons. We have redoubled efforts to address this onerous challenge within our borders and across the West African sub-region.

20.    In doing so, we also recognize the need for a broad-based global partnership in the on-going battle against trans-border crimes, including terrorism and acts of piracy. It is regrettable that these scourges are sustained by unfettered access by non-state actors to illicit small arms and light weapons with which they foster insecurity and instability across our continent. For us in Africa, these are the ‘weapons of mass destruction’!

21.    It is therefore, in the light of our collective obligation and unceasing struggle to end this nightmare, that I congratulate Member-States on the adoption of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in April this year.  Our hope is that upon its entry into force, the ATT would herald an era of accountable trade in conventional arms which is critical to the security of nations.

22.    In line with our continued commitment to this project, Nigeria has signed and ratified the Treaty.  We will continue to engage other Member-States for its successful implementation.

Mr. President,
23.    Terrorism constitutes a major threat to global peace and security, and undermines the capacity for sustained development.  In Nigeria, the threat of terrorism in a few States in the North Eastern part of our country has proven to be a challenge to national stability.  We will spare no effort in addressing this menace.  We are therefore confronting it with every resource at our disposal with due regard for fundamental human rights and the rule of law.

24.    Nigeria will like to place on record its appreciation to the international community for its support in this regard.  The reign of terror anywhere in the world is an assault on our collective humanity.  Three days ago, the stark reality of this menace was again brought to the fore by the dastardly terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya. We must stand together to win this war together.

Mr. President,
25.    Piracy, like terrorism, is another menace that has attained worrisome proportions, especially in Africa’s coastal waters. At the bilateral and multilateral levels, Nigeria has promoted cooperation to mitigate its impact and consequences on the security and economies of the affected coastal states.

26.    Indeed, in June this year, the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Gulf of Guinea Commission met in Yaounde, Cameroon, and came up with practical steps to collectively confront the menace of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.  This effort will, no doubt, require reinforcement and wider support and collaborative action on the part of our international partners.

Mr. President,
27.    The situation in the Middle East remains volatile.  The reported use of chemical weapons in the Syrian crisis, is unacceptable.  Nigeria condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the use of chemical weapons that are prohibited by International Conventions.
28.    We applaud the current diplomatic efforts to avert further escalation of the crisis.  We urge all parties involved to end the violence and seek a negotiated solution, including the instrumentality of the United Nations.

29.    The threat which nuclear weapons pose to the survival of the human race is to be understood not just in the context of aspirational nations but also the nations already in possession of such weapons. Nuclear weapons are as unsafe in the hands of small powers as they are in the hands of the major powers. It is our collective responsibility to urge the international community to respond to the clarion call for a peaceful universe in an age of uncertainty.

30.    We can attain this objective if we adopt measures and policies that will promote nuclear disarmament, protect and renew our environment, and push towards an international system that is based on trust, mutual respect and shared goals.

Mr. President,
31.    I believe that I express the concern of many about the slow pace of effort and apparent lack of progress in the reform of the United Nations, especially the Security Council.  We believe strongly, that the call for democratization worldwide should not be for States only, but also, for International Organizations such as the UN.  That is why we call for the democratization of the Security Council.

32.    This is desirable for the enthronement of justice, equity, and fairness; and also for the promotion of a sense of inclusiveness and balance in our world.

33.    Our support for the United Nations Security Council in its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security has been total and unwavering.  We have, in previous membership of the Council, demonstrated both the political will and capacity to engage in key Council responsibilities.  Nigeria has therefore decided to seek election for the 2014-2015 Non-Permanent Seat of the UNSC.

34.    I am pleased to state that Nigeria has received the endorsement of the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union.  We urge this august Assembly to endorse Nigeria’s candidature.

Mr. President,
35.    Our world continues to be confronted by pressing problems and threats.  No statement that will be made during this Session can exhaust the extent of these problems.  The world looks to us, as leaders, to provide hope in the midst of crisis, to provide guidance through difficult socio-political divisions, and to ensure that we live in a better world.

36.    We have obligations to the present generation, but we have a greater obligation to generations yet unborn who should one day inherit a world of sufficiency irrespective of the circumstances of their birth or where they  reside on the globe.  We must work to make that world a reality in recognition of our common heritage.

37.    We must strive to eradicate poverty, hunger, disease and human misery; we must eliminate the scourge of nuclear, chemical, biological, as well as small arms and light weapons. We must dedicate ourselves to working together to address global, regional and national challenges and deliver a more peaceful, equitable and prosperous world for all.  It is our duty.  We must not fail.

38.    I thank you.
